Integrating an eBay Store into Your Auction Business
Once you've got your eBay business up and running, you'll want to consider opening an eBay Store. Why?
To begin with, it is substantially cheaper to list items in your store than it is to list a regular auction. Store listings only cost you either $0.05 or $0.10 – depending on the price you set – for 30 days (plus any listing upgrades you choose) regardless of the price you set (Store items always have a fixed price). You can set a time of 30, 60, 90, or 120 days, or simply run it until you choose to cancel the listing. In the last case, your listing will remain active forever (until you cancel it), and eBay will automatically charge you $0.05 (or $0.10) every 30 days.
Running a multiple-item listing (similar to the Dutch auction format) will not increase your insertion fee, another big advantage of eBay Stores. With a regular Dutch auction listing, your insertion fee increases according to the opening bid times the number of items you make available (in other words, the more items you make available, the higher your listing fee will be). With a Stores listing, you could set the number of available items to 1,000 and still only pay $0.05.
There is the disadvantage of a monthly fee (starting at $15.95) as well as higher final-value fees, but if you run your store right the disadvantages are all offset by the increased business you'll be doing.
You also get free access to eBay's management tool, Selling Manager or Selling Manager Pro depending on your subscription level. I talk about what Selling Manager is in the Auction Management Software section of this book.
With proper promotion, you'll be able to drive traffic to your store where your customers will have the opportunity to browse through your items, just as if they were at a retail internet store. Buyers can add you to their eBay Favorites and you'll begin to do repeat business.
So why have an eBay Store when you could just open a regular internet store and not have to pay insertion or final-value fees? For one very simple reason: Cross promoting eBay items with any web site off eBay is against the rules and can get you suspended. However, eBay allows cross promotion of auction items with your eBay Store.
The reason the ability to cross promote is so important is because of eBay's more than 50 million active buyers, something that you don't have access to off eBay.
It's a necessity to list auction items in which you can promote your store. This is because it's very difficult to get people to your store otherwise.
eBay's search engine does not search eBay Stores listings. A member has to specifically go to the Stores page and run a search from there. Trust me, almost nobody does that. I've only ever done it once in my life.
However, I very regularly visit a seller's eBay Store (if they have one) when I am looking at regular auction listings. This is because I know I can buy something right away, rather than competing against other buyers or waiting for the auction to end.
When I spoke with one of eBay's most successful eBay Stores owners, he let me know that about 25% of his listings were in the auction format. He came to that ratio as a result of his experience.
Do your own experiments. With time, you'll find the perfect ratio that works best for you.
